....and some came marching home: The Civil War

The American Civil War was one of the most bloody wars in American history. Hundreds of thousands of Americans on both sides died fighting for a cause they believed in. In this compilation CD you can read of the struggles they went through, of the deprivations they suffered, and thoughts that caused them to wage war for an ideal.

This CD is the first of a series looking at war through the eyes of those who fought. Most of the authors survived, some did not, but each has a story to tell.

Army Life of an Illinois Soldier (1906)
This is a compilation of the diaries and letters of Charles W. Wills who began the war as a private in the 8th Illinois Infantry and ended the war as a Lt. Colonel in the 103rd Illinois Infantry. He was part of Sherman's march to the sea.

The Civil War Diary of Charles H. Lynch, 18th Conn. Volunteers (1915)
Charles H. Lynch joined the 18th Connecticut Volunteers in 1862 and served through the end of the war. This book covers the exploits of the 18th Connecticut Volunteers while Lynch was enlisted.

Diary of Battery A, First Reg. Rhode Island Light Artillery (1865)
As recorded by artilleryman Theodore Reichardt, this is the history of Battery A of the First Regiment of the Rhode Island Artillery. It was published immediately at the end of the war (1865). The book also records a list of the members of the Battery when it was mustered and promotions. The book covers from 1861 to 1864.

My Diary North and South (1863)
The diary of William H. Russell was published during the middle of the war (1863) and contains the muses of an observer who traveled both sides of the line. He returned to England before the war's conclusion.

The Vicksburg Campaign (1913)
As relayed by J.J. Kellogg of the 113th Illinois Volunteers, this book covers the Vicksburg campaign from July 4th, 1863 to July 29th, 1863.

Collection of Civil War Written by Mercer County Soldiers (unk)
This is a collection of letters written by soldiers from Mercer County, Illinois. There were reportedly only 150 copies of this book made and it reports to contain records on the capture of Jefferson Davis and the protests of innocence by Edman Spangler in regards to the assassination of President Lincoln.

Downing's Civil War Diary (1916)
Written by a soldier from Iowa, Alexander Downing, it covers the exploits of the Army of Tennessee through the war.

Famous Adventures and Prison Escapes of the Civil War (1898)
This collection of prison escape stories was taken from the war diaries of Civil War veterans. Read about their exploits as they fought against circumstance to get back to their lines and fight again.

History of the Forty-Eighth Regiment M.V.M (1907)
Compiled by Historian Albert Plummer from the writings and testimonies of surviving members of the 48th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, this volume contains over a dozen portraits of the officers of the regiment. It also contains a list of the soldiers of the regiment, when they served, and from where they hailed.

McNeil's Last Charge (1912)
This book is a first hand account of John McNeill's charge against Federal troops in Mt. Jackson, Virginia in 1864. It also includes a roster of the men serving with Captain McNeill. This book has also been used as a guide for partisan tactics against a superior foe.

Memoirs of the Civil War Vol.1 and Vol.2 (1912)
Presented from the Confederate perspective, this two volume set follows the units in which Captain William Chamberlaine served. Captain Chamberlaine served in the Army of Northern Virginia from 1861 to 1865.

Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and The Civil War (1898)
This book contains the recollections of James R. Gilmore in regards to Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Gilmore was a confidant of President Lincoln and recorded their conversations during the war. The book contains discussions that Mr. Lincoln had not only with Mr. Gilmore, but also others who were in the presence of the author and Mr. Lincoln.

Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman (1908)
This is the history of the Michigan Calvary Brigade during the Civil War. The author, J.H. Kidd, relays his experiences in the Civil War from recruitment until the end of the war while under the command of that famous commander who later died in the Indian Wars, George Armstrong Custer. The book also contains a list of those killed in action as well as the date of their death and location.

Private & Official Correspondence of Gen. Benjamin Butler Vol.1 - 4(1917)
This four volume set contains the official and personal correspondences of General Benjamin Butler. General Butler commanded Union forces in various theaters throughout the Civil War. The correspondences in these four volumes are arranged in chronological order and provide an interesting perspective.

Reminiscences of Chicago during the Civil War (1914)
This volume strives to present the conditions in cities during the Civil War. While the deprivations suffered in the battlefield are understood, the deprivations suffered by civilians are less well understood. While Chicago during the Civil War did not suffer to the extent of say Richmond or Washington, this volume does give a look at the war that is not often considered.

Reminiscences of Civil War (unk)
While most of the combat in the Civil War occurred east of the Mississippi, it should be remembered that states west of the Mississippi also participated in the War. This book was written by Ralph J. Smith of the 2nd Texas Infantry.

The Photographic History of The Civil War Vol.1 (1911)
This first of a ten volume set recalls the Civil War through the pictures of the time. This first volume contains extensive lists of commanding officers from both sides as well as hundreds of portraits. The information is divided by side and even campaign.

Pictorial History of The Civil War Vol.1 - 3 (1866)
A second set of volumes that make a pictorial history of the Civil War. This set contains many pencil drawings of the war and makes an interesting visual experience to accompany the text.
